the candy store

I had come from the Hustler organization in columbus, ohio. After a six month sojourn to NYC where I met all the publishers, who were most interested to meet someone from Hustler (the name was like 'magic' in those days.

I got to know all the publishers and editors, but there was a problem for photographers...

no models.

All of the photographers who were shooting for the magazines regularly were in Southern California. Girls from all over America were going to Hollywood to become 'movie stars'

But like the Bacharach song 'Do You Know The Way To San Jose?' they ended up like the girls and guys in the song. .

"LA is a great big freeway, put a hundred down and buy a car.  In a week or two they'll make you a star. Weeks turn into years, how quick they pass and all the stars that never were are parking cars and pumping gas...

or in the case of many girls? they answered an ad in the newspaper and ended up at World Modeling in The San Fernando Valley (or more specifically Sherman Oaks)

I can remember those first days, weeks, even months of going into the office and studio
there on Van Nuys Boulevard... There was no other way to describe it than a
Big Wonderful Candy Store
for young male photographers like me.

Dozens of lovely girls coming in everyday,
going to the back room where they got naked for their
polaroids. Friendly girls, horny girls, girls who loved the idea of fame and
fortune (even at the $60 a day that we all paid in those days of the mid 70s.

Girls who loved posing and loved getting turned on during the shooting..
and usually ready to jump the bones of the first guy they could get their hands on..
and that was usually the most fortunate of all guys
THE PHOTOGRAPHERS

We paid the agents fee but it was worth it...

The lineup was so incredible that soon photographers from all over the world
were making their way to 'World Modeling'

The name was a bit pretentious when it first opened but
soon became a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Those were the days...
gone but not forgotten by many of us...
